Kleptomorphs

Kleptomorphs are a speculative concept describing fictional creatures or entities that possess the ability to steal or mimic the appearances, abilities, or even the essence of other beings. This term, a portmanteau of "kleptomania" (an impulse control disorder characterized by recurrent failure to resist urges to steal things) and "morph" (meaning to change form), suggests a parasitic or mimetic existence.

The exact nature of a kleptomorph can vary greatly within fictional narratives. Some might be physical shapeshifters, able to perfectly imitate the form of their victims after an encounter. Others might have more esoteric abilities, such as draining memories, skills, or even magical powers, leaving the original being diminished or devoid of those traits. This often results in a confusion of identity for the observer, as the kleptomorph may present itself as the stolen individual or entity.

The motivation behind a kleptomorph's actions is typically survival, adaptation, or a desire for power. By assuming the form or abilities of others, they can evade predators, gain access to resources, or infiltrate societies. The threat posed by kleptomorphs often lies in their deceptive nature, making it difficult to distinguish them from genuine individuals until their true nature is revealed, usually through some flaw in their mimicry or an overt act of aggression.
