Klangforvrængninger, often translated as "sound distortion" or "audio artifacts," refers to unintended alterations in an audio signal that deviate from the original source. These alterations can manifest in various ways, affecting the fidelity and quality of the sound.

Common causes of klangforvrængninger include technical limitations in recording equipment, processing software, or playback systems. Overloading audio circuits, such as when a microphone or amplifier receives too strong a signal, can lead to clipping, a harsh, often square-wave distortion. Digital audio processing can introduce artifacts if not implemented correctly, such as aliasing during downsampling or quantization errors.

Physical factors can also contribute. For example, resonance within an enclosure or room can create unwanted coloration or booming sounds. In digital transmission, packet loss can result in dropouts or glitches in the audio stream. While some forms of distortion are considered undesirable and detrimental to audio quality, others, like harmonic distortion, can be intentionally employed in musical contexts, such as overdrive or fuzz effects in guitar amplification, to achieve specific sonic characteristics.
