Klórvegyületek refers to chemical compounds that contain chlorine. Chlorine is a highly reactive element and forms a vast array of compounds with other elements, including metals, nonmetals, and organic molecules. These compounds exhibit diverse chemical and physical properties, making them useful in numerous applications.

Inorganic chlorine compounds include simple salts like sodium chloride (table salt), potassium chloride, and calcium chloride, which have widespread industrial and domestic uses. Chlorides of metals like iron, copper, and magnesium are also common. Other inorganic examples include chlorates and perchlorates, which are strong oxidizing agents.

Organic chlorine compounds, also known as organochlorines, are a large and important class of chemicals. They are characterized by the presence of at least one carbon-chlorine bond. Examples range from simple chlorinated hydrocarbons like chloroform and carbon tetrachloride to more complex molecules such as polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a widely used plastic. Many pesticides, herbicides, and solvents are also organochlorines.

The applications of chlorine compounds are extensive. They are used in the production of plastics, pharmaceuticals, disinfectants, water treatment, refrigerants, and as intermediates in the synthesis of many other chemicals.
