Kirjoituslevyt

Kirjoituslevyt, also known as writing or writing discs, are a type of media used primarily for storing digital information. Historically, these discs have been used for data recording, data transfer, and archival purposes. The term "kirjoituslevyt" is Finnish and translates to "writing discs" in English, indicating their functionality related to writing or recording data onto a physical medium.

Typically, kirjoituslevyt are made from plastic substrates coated with reflective and data-sensitive layers. They can be written to using specialized optical disc drives that utilize laser technology to encode data onto the surface. The most common types of kirjoituslevyt include CD-R, DVD-R, and Blu-ray discs, each offering different storage capacities and data densities. CD-Rs usually store up to 700 MB, while DVDs can hold 4.7 GB or more, and Blu-ray discs can contain up to 50 GB or more.

The use of kirjoituslevyt peaked in the late 20th and early 21st centuries, serving as a popular medium for music, video, and data backups. Although their popularity has declined due to the rise of digital downloads, cloud storage, and USB flash drives, they remain valuable for certain archival and distribution applications.

Rewritable variants (e.g., CD-RW, DVD-RW, and Blu-ray ReWritable) allow data to be erased and rewritten multiple times, providing flexibility for users needing to update stored information.
