Kipuaistimet, also known as nociceptors, are specialized sensory nerve endings that detect and respond to noxious stimuli, which are potentially or actually damaging to tissue. These receptors are a crucial part of the pain pathway, alerting the nervous system to harmful conditions. When stimulated, nociceptors initiate a signal that travels along nerve fibers to the spinal cord and then up to the brain, where it is interpreted as pain.

There are several types of nociceptors, each sensitive to different kinds of stimuli. Mechanical nociceptors respond to intense pressure or pinching. Thermal nociceptors are activated by extreme heat or cold. Chemical nociceptors are triggered by various chemicals, including those released by damaged tissues or inflammatory processes, as well as external irritants. Polymodal nociceptors are versatile and can respond to a combination of mechanical, thermal, and chemical stimuli.

The activation threshold for nociceptors is generally higher than that for other sensory receptors. This means they typically only fire when a stimulus reaches a level that could cause actual tissue damage. This protective mechanism is essential for survival, allowing organisms to withdraw from harmful situations and to protect injured areas, promoting healing. The sensation of pain, mediated by nociceptors, serves as a vital warning system.
