Kineret

Kineret is a brand name for a medication containing the active ingredient anakinra. Anakinra is a recombinant, non-glycosylated form of the human interleukin-1 receptor antagonist (IL-1Ra). It is a biologic drug that works by blocking the action of interleukin-1 (IL-1), a protein that plays a role in inflammation. Kineret is administered by subcutaneous injection.

In the United States, Kineret is approved for the treatment of moderately to severely active rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in adult patients who have had an inadequate response or intolerance to at least one disease-modifying antirheumatic drug (DMARD). It is often used in combination with other RA medications. In some regions, Kineret may also be approved for other inflammatory conditions.

The mechanism of action of Kineret involves binding to the IL-1 type I receptor, thereby preventing IL-1 alpha and IL-1 beta from signaling. By inhibiting IL-1, Kineret can reduce inflammation and its associated symptoms in conditions like rheumatoid arthritis, such as joint pain, swelling, and stiffness.

Common side effects associated with Kineret use can include injection site reactions (redness, swelling, pain, itching), upper respiratory tract infections, headache, and flu-like symptoms. Serious side effects are possible, including an increased risk of infection due to its immunosuppressive effects, and allergic reactions. Patients are advised to inform their healthcare provider of any pre-existing medical conditions, particularly infections, before starting Kineret.
