Kinasientsyymiryhmä, also known as the Kinase Enzyme Group, is a broad classification of enzymes that play a crucial role in cellular signaling. These enzymes are responsible for catalyzing the transfer of a phosphate group from a high-energy donor molecule, typically adenosine triphosphate (ATP), to a specific substrate molecule. This process is known as phosphorylation.

Phosphorylation is a fundamental regulatory mechanism in virtually all biological processes. By adding a phosphate group, kinases can alter the activity, localization, or interaction of their target proteins, thereby modulating a wide range of cellular functions. These functions include cell growth, differentiation, metabolism, apoptosis (programmed cell death), and immune responses.

Kinases can be broadly categorized based on the amino acid residues they phosphorylate, such as serine/threonine kinases and tyrosine kinases. Serine/threonine kinases target hydroxyl groups on serine or threonine residues, while tyrosine kinases target the hydroxyl group on tyrosine residues. There are also dual-specificity kinases that can phosphorylate both types of residues.

The dysregulation of kinase activity is implicated in numerous diseases, most notably cancer. Many targeted cancer therapies are designed to inhibit specific kinases that are overactive or mutated in cancer cells, thereby disrupting tumor growth and survival. Research into kinases and their roles continues to be a vibrant area of molecular biology and medicine.
