Kiltojan

Kiltojan is a town in the central highlands of the fictional Republic of Aurel, along the Kil River near the eastern edge of the Silver Range. It has about 8,200 residents (2023) and is the administrative center of Kiltojan District in Northridge Province, located roughly 60 km north of the provincial capital.

The name Kiltojan has debated origins: some interpret Kil as a river bend and tojan as market, while others link the name to a 12th-century trader named Kil.

Geography: Situated at about 420 m elevation, the town benefits from river irrigation. The surrounding farmland grows barley, wheat, grapes, and vegetables. The climate is temperate with moderate rainfall.

History: Founded as a river crossing and market in the 12th century, Kiltojan later developed a fortress in the 14th century. It joined the Republic of Aurel in 1822; the railway arrived in 1902, integrating it into wider markets.

Economy and infrastructure: The economy centers on agriculture, small-scale manufacturing, and services. Local crafts include pottery and wood turning. Public services include a district hospital and a vocational college; transport relies on a two-lane road network and a railway spur.

Culture and landmarks: Kiltojan hosts an annual River Festival with markets and music. Landmarks include Kiltojan Fortress, the Old Market Hall, and the Kilford Bridge. Kiltojanan is spoken alongside the national language.
