Killeen

Killeen is a city in Bell County, Texas, United States. It is part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood metropolitan area in central Texas, located roughly 60 miles north of Austin. The city sits near the larger military installation known today as Fort Cavazos, a central employer and community anchor.

Killeen began as a railroad town in the late 19th century and grew rapidly after the establishment of the nearby military post during World War II. The presence of Fort Cavazos has shaped the city’s economy, demographics, and growth.

Demographics and economy: As of the 2020 census, Killeen’s population was in the range of about 160,000 residents. The economy is dominated by Fort Cavazos/army-related employment, with retail, healthcare, and public services also contributing.
