Kiinteäelektrolyytillä, often translated as solid electrolyte, refers to a type of electrolyte material that is in a solid state. Unlike traditional liquid electrolytes, which are commonly found in batteries and electrochemical devices, solid electrolytes do not contain free-moving liquid ions. This solid nature offers several potential advantages, including enhanced safety due to the elimination of flammable liquid components, improved thermal stability, and the possibility of higher energy densities in electrochemical applications.

The conductivity in solid electrolytes is achieved through the movement of ions within the solid lattice structure. Various classes of solid electrolytes exist, each with different chemical compositions and ionic transport mechanisms. These include ceramic electrolytes, such as oxides and sulfides, polymer electrolytes, which are typically polymers blended with salts, and composite electrolytes, combining aspects of both ceramic and polymer materials. The development of efficient solid electrolytes is a key area of research for next-generation energy storage devices, particularly solid-state batteries. These batteries aim to replace liquid electrolytes with solid alternatives to overcome limitations associated with liquid systems, such as dendrite formation and leakage.
