Kiinnitysvärjäys refers to a dyeing process where a mordant is used to fix the dye to the fibers of a material. This method is particularly important in textile dyeing and other applications where colorfastness is desired. A mordant is a substance, typically a metallic salt, that acts as a bridge between the dye and the fiber. It forms a complex with the dye molecules, making them insoluble within the fiber structure and thus more resistant to fading from washing, light, and friction.

The process typically involves preparing the fabric, which may include scouring and bleaching to remove impurities. Then, the fabric is treated with a mordant solution. This mordanting step can be done before dyeing (pre-mordanting), during dyeing (meta-mordanting), or after dyeing (post-mordanting), depending on the type of fiber, dye, and desired outcome. After mordanting, the fabric is immersed in the dye bath. The mordant interacts with both the dye and the fiber, creating a strong chemical bond. Once the dyeing is complete, the fabric is rinsed to remove any unfixed dye.

Commonly used mordants include alum (aluminum potassium sulfate), iron (ferrous sulfate), copper (copper sulfate), and tin (stannous chloride). The choice of mordant can significantly influence the final color, often shifting the hue or increasing the intensity of the dye. For instance, alum often produces bright, clear colors, while iron can lead to darker, more muted tones or create different shades altogether. Kiinnitysvärjäys is a traditional technique still employed in artisanal dyeing and in some industrial processes to achieve durable and vibrant colors on a variety of materials like cotton, wool, and silk.
