Proton and ion sources are generally more complex. One common type is the Penning ion source, which uses a magnetic field to confine electrons and gas, leading to ionization of the gas and extraction of ions. Another is the ECR (Electron Cyclotron Resonance) ion source, which uses microwaves to heat electrons in a magnetic field, efficiently ionizing gas atoms to produce the desired ions.

The performance of the particle accelerator is heavily dependent on the quality and stability of the beam produced by the kiihdytinlähteet. Factors such as beam current, emittance, and energy spread are all determined by the source.
