Kihlasõrmus

Kihlasõrmus, also known as an engagement ring, is a ring worn by individuals who are engaged to be married. It symbolizes a promise of marriage and the commitment between two people. While the tradition of exchanging rings has ancient roots, the modern concept of a dedicated engagement ring gained prominence in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The design and material of a kihlasõrmus can vary greatly depending on cultural customs, personal preferences, and economic factors. Historically, precious metals like gold and silver have been common choices. Gemstones, particularly diamonds, have become a popular and often expected feature of engagement rings in many Western cultures, largely due to effective marketing campaigns promoting the idea of a diamond as a symbol of eternal love. Other gemstones such as sapphires, rubies, and emeralds are also used.

In many traditions, the kihlasõrmus is worn on the fourth finger of the left hand, often referred to as the ring finger. This practice is believed to stem from an ancient Roman superstition that a vein, the vena amoris or "vein of love," ran directly from this finger to the heart. While this anatomical belief is not scientifically accurate, the tradition has persisted in many cultures. In some regions, particularly in parts of Eastern Europe, it is customary to wear the engagement ring on the right hand.
