This concept is central to waste management and circular economy initiatives. The route begins with the consumer or business separating waste into designated recycling bins. From there, collection services, often municipal or private, pick up these materials on scheduled routes. The collected items are then typically taken to a materials recovery facility (MRF) where they are further sorted by type, such as paper, plastic, glass, and metal. Advanced MRFs use a combination of manual labor and automated machinery, including optical sorters and magnets, to achieve efficient separation. Once sorted, the recyclable materials are baled or prepared for transport to processing plants.
