Kielitaitokriteeristöjä, or language proficiency criteria, are standardized frameworks used to assess and describe an individual's ability to use a foreign or second language. These criteria provide a common understanding of what it means to be proficient at different levels, from beginner to advanced. They are essential tools for language education, immigration, employment, and academic admissions.

The most widely recognized system for language proficiency criteria is the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The CEFR divides language proficiency into six levels: A1 (Beginner), A2 (Elementary), B1 (Intermediate), B2 (Upper Intermediate), C1 (Advanced), and C2 (Mastery). Each level is further broken down into descriptors for listening, reading, speaking, and writing skills. These descriptors outline what a learner can understand, express, and interact with at each stage of their language learning journey.

Beyond the CEFR, many countries and institutions have developed their own specific language proficiency criteria or tests that align with or adapt the CEFR principles. These might be tailored for specific professional contexts, such as medical or legal fields, or for particular language learning programs. The purpose of these criteria is to provide objective and comparable measures of language skills, ensuring fairness and transparency in evaluations. They help learners set realistic goals, educators design effective curricula, and employers or institutions make informed decisions about candidates' language abilities.
