Kibitzer

Kibitzer is a noun describing a person who watches a game or activity and offers unsolicited commentary, often about the players’ decisions. The term is especially common in card games such as bridge, poker, and rummy, as well as in chess and billiards, where spectators may advise, critique, or joke from the sidelines. The kibitzer may be invited to speak at times, but more often the commentary is unsolicited and can be distracting to participants.

Etymology: The word derives from the Yiddish kibitzn, meaning to look on or to chat and give advice; ultimately from Germanic roots. The English noun kibitzer entered American English in the early 20th century and is used widely in gaming and social contexts.

Usage and etiquette: In informal settings, kibitzing is a social pastime, often lighthearted. In formal or competitive settings, excessive kibitzing can be frowned upon and may violate etiquette or tournament rules. Some venues designate quiet periods or request silence during critical moves.
