Khmerspeaking

Khmerspeaking refers to the use and understanding of the Khmer language. Khmer, also known as Cambodian, is an Austroasiatic language spoken by the Khmer people, who are the principal ethnic group of Cambodia. It is the official language of Cambodia and is also spoken by significant minority communities in neighboring countries, particularly in Vietnam and Thailand, as well as by diaspora populations worldwide.

The Khmer language has a long and rich history, with evidence of its written form dating back to the 7th century CE. It belongs to the Mon-Khmer branch of the Austroasiatic language family, which also includes languages spoken in parts of India and Southeast Asia. Khmer is characterized by its complex grammar and vocabulary, influenced by Sanskrit and Pali due to historical cultural and religious ties with India.

Khmerspeaking communities are found not only in Cambodia but also in provinces of Vietnam such as the Mekong Delta, and in parts of Thailand bordering Cambodia. In recent decades, due to political events and economic migration, Khmerspeaking populations have also established themselves in countries like France, the United States, Australia, and Canada, contributing to the global spread of the language. Efforts to preserve and promote Khmerspeaking include language education programs, cultural initiatives, and media content produced in the Khmer language.
