Khazâd

Khazâd is the Sindarin (Elvish) name for the Dwarves of Middle-earth, as conceived by J.R.R. Tolkien. The Dwarves themselves referred to their race as Khazâd. This term is most famously known from the inscription on the West-gate of Moria, which reads "Ennyn Durin Aran Moria: Pedo Mellon a minno." This translates from Sindarin to "The Doors of Durin Lord of Moria: Speak Friend and Enter." The word "Khazâd" itself is not directly present in that inscription but is understood to be their own name for their people.

The Dwarves were created by the Vala Aulë and are characterized by their resilience, craftsmanship, and deep connection to the earth and its treasures. They are renowned for their skill in mining, smithing, and stonework, creating magnificent cities and intricate artifacts. Their lifespan is significantly longer than that of Men, and they are known to hold grudges for long periods. Despite their often solitary and gruff nature, they are fiercely loyal to their kin and allies. The Khazâd have a rich history of both great achievements and tragic falls, often marked by their pursuit of wealth and the dangers lurking beneath the mountains. Their language, Khuzdul, is a closely guarded secret, rarely taught to outsiders.
