Khammouane

Khammouane is a province located in central Laos. It is bordered by Thailand to the west, Bolikhamsai Province to the north, Savannakhet Province to the south, and Vietnam to the east. The provincial capital is Thakhek. The province is known for its karst landscape, including numerous caves and limestone formations. The Xe Bang Fai River, one of the largest rivers in Laos, flows through Khammouane, and is a significant waterway for local transportation and fishing.

The economy of Khammouane is largely based on agriculture, with rice being the primary crop. Other agricultural products include coffee, rubber, and livestock. Mining is also an important sector, with deposits of gypsum and coal. Tourism is a growing industry, attracted by the province's natural beauty and cultural heritage. Key attractions include the Kong Lor Cave, a spectacular underground river cave, and the Nakai Plateau, a region of high-altitude plains.

Khammouane has a diverse population, with ethnic Lao being the majority. Other ethnic groups include Phu Tai, Khmu, and Brou. The province has a rich cultural heritage, with traditional festivals and ceremonies observed throughout the year. Buddhism is the dominant religion. The province's strategic location along the Mekong River and its proximity to Thailand have historically made it an important center for trade and cultural exchange.
