Kevythybrideissä, often translated as "mild hybrids" or "light hybrids" in English, refers to a specific type of vehicle powertrain that incorporates a small electric motor and battery alongside a traditional internal combustion engine. Unlike full hybrids that can propel the vehicle on electric power alone for significant distances, a lightweight hybrid system primarily assists the gasoline engine. The electric motor's main roles are to provide a small boost during acceleration, allow for smoother engine stop-start functionality, and enable more efficient energy recovery through regenerative braking. This captured energy is stored in a small battery, typically a 48-volt system, which is less complex and costly than the larger, higher-voltage batteries found in full hybrids. The primary goal of a lightweight hybrid system is to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions compared to a purely internal combustion engine, without the added weight, complexity, and cost associated with more powerful hybrid powertrains. These systems are often found in mainstream vehicles aiming for incremental efficiency gains.
