Ketonyhdisteen
Ketonyhdisteen is a Finnish term that translates to "ketone compound" in English. Ketones are organic compounds characterized by the presence of a carbonyl group (C=O) within a carbon chain. This functional group is bonded to two other carbon atoms. The general formula for a ketone is R-CO-R', where R and R' represent alkyl or aryl groups. The simplest ketone is acetone, also known as propanone, which has the formula CH3COCH3. Ketones are found in various natural and synthetic products and play important roles in biological processes. For instance, they are involved in metabolism, and some ketones like acetone are used as solvents. The chemical properties of ketones are largely determined by the reactivity of the carbonyl group, which can undergo nucleophilic addition reactions. This makes them useful intermediates in organic synthesis. Common examples of ketones include cyclohexanone, used in nylon production, and benzophenone, used in fragrances and as a photoinitiator. Their polarity due to the carbonyl group also influences their solubility in different solvents.
