Kesselhäuser

Kesselhäuser, literally translated as "boiler houses," are structures designed to house boilers and associated equipment for heating systems. These buildings are essential for providing heat to residential, commercial, and industrial facilities, particularly in colder climates. They are often located on or near the premises they serve to minimize heat loss in distribution pipes.

The primary function of a Kesselhaus is to contain the large boilers, which can be fueled by various sources including natural gas, oil, coal, or biomass. Within the Kesselhaus, auxiliary equipment such as water pumps, expansion vessels, chimneys, and control systems are also housed. Safety is a paramount consideration in the design and operation of these structures, with stringent regulations in place regarding ventilation, fire prevention, and emissions control.

Historically, Kesselhäuser were more common as standalone buildings. However, with advancements in technology and urban planning, they are increasingly integrated into larger buildings or situated underground. Modern Kesselhäuser are designed for efficiency and reduced environmental impact, often incorporating co-generation capabilities to produce both heat and electricity. The term can also refer to a central heating plant serving multiple buildings in a district heating network.
