Keskuslaskimo

Keskuslaskimo refers to a central vein in the body, typically the superior vena cava or inferior vena cava. These are large veins that collect deoxygenated blood from the body and return it to the heart. The superior vena cava receives blood from the upper body, including the head, neck, and arms. The inferior vena cava receives blood from the lower body, such as the legs, abdomen, and pelvis. Both vena cavae empty into the right atrium of the heart, completing the systemic circulation of blood.

The term "keskuslaskimo" can also be used in a more general sense to refer to any large vein that is centrally located and plays a significant role in blood return. In medical contexts, central venous catheters are often inserted into these large central veins to administer fluids, medications, or to monitor central venous pressure. Conditions affecting the central veins can have serious implications for blood circulation and overall health.
