Keskilevyvyöhykkeet refers to mid-ocean ridges, which are underwater mountain ranges formed by plate tectonics. These ridges are a prominent feature of the Earth's ocean floor, stretching for tens of thousands of kilometers. They are created as tectonic plates pull apart, allowing magma from the Earth's mantle to rise and cool, forming new oceanic crust. This process is known as seafloor spreading.

The rate at which seafloor spreads varies along different mid-ocean ridges. Fast-spreading ridges, such as the East Pacific Rise, are characterized by smooth topography and a relatively narrow rift valley. In contrast, slow-spreading ridges, like the Mid-Atlantic Ridge, have a more rugged topography with a wider and deeper rift valley. This difference in spreading rate influences the geological features and hydrothermal activity observed at these locations.

Hydrothermal vents are common along mid-ocean ridges. These vents release superheated, mineral-rich fluids from beneath the seafloor. They support unique ecosystems of chemosynthetic organisms, which derive energy from chemical reactions rather than sunlight. The study of mid-ocean ridges is crucial for understanding plate tectonics, the formation of ocean basins, and the distribution of marine life.
