The term is used when the material shows kerogen‑like properties yet falls outside standard kerogen definitions due to origin, precursor history, or maturity.

Kerogen is a complex, insoluble macromolecule composed of interlinked aliphatic and aromatic structures with heteroatoms such as oxygen, nitrogen, and sulfur. Kerogenlike material shares these macromolecular traits and insolubility, but may occur as amorphous or cross‑linked organic matter in shale, oil shale, coal, or other sedimentary rocks where its precise classification is uncertain. Its composition and hydrogen index can vary widely, reflecting different biological precursors and diagenetic histories.

Analytical approaches: Characterization often includes Rock‑Eval pyrolysis to obtain S1, S2, and Tmax values, elemental analysis (H/C, O/C), and spectroscopic techniques such as FTIR, 13C NMR, or Raman to evaluate macromolecular structure and composition. The distinction between kerogen and kerogenlike material is a matter of classification and maturity, not a strict difference in basic chemistry.
