Keratinotsüütidele refers to keratinocytes, which are the main type of cells found in the epidermis, the outermost layer of the skin. These cells are responsible for producing keratin, a tough, fibrous protein that forms the structural component of hair, nails, and the outer protective layer of the skin.

Keratinocytes originate in the stratum basale, the deepest layer of the epidermis, where they undergo cell division. As they mature, they migrate upwards through the different layers of the epidermis, undergoing changes in their shape and composition. During this process, they accumulate keratin and flatten out, forming the squamous cells of the stratum corneum, the outermost layer of the epidermis. This layer acts as a barrier, protecting the body from physical damage, infection, and dehydration.

The lifespan of a keratinocyte is approximately one month, from its generation in the basal layer to its eventual shedding from the surface of the skin. This continuous renewal process ensures the integrity and protective function of the skin. Disruptions in keratinocyte differentiation or proliferation can lead to various skin conditions, such as psoriasis, eczema, and ichthyosis. Understanding the biology of keratinocytes is crucial for developing treatments for these dermatological disorders and for advancing skin regeneration therapies.
