Keramismoottorina, which translates to "ceramic engine" in Finnish, refers to an internal combustion engine where at least some of the critical components are manufactured from ceramic materials instead of traditional metals. The primary motivation behind developing ceramic engines is to overcome the limitations of metal engines, particularly concerning heat and wear resistance.

Ceramics possess several properties that make them attractive for engine applications. They exhibit excellent high-temperature strength, meaning they can withstand higher operating temperatures than metals. This higher temperature capability allows for more efficient combustion, potentially leading to increased power output and reduced fuel consumption. Furthermore, ceramics have a lower coefficient of thermal expansion compared to metals, which can reduce the risk of thermal stresses and component distortion. Their inherent hardness also provides superior wear resistance, potentially extending the lifespan of engine parts and reducing the need for lubrication.

Despite these advantages, the widespread adoption of ceramic engines has been hindered by significant challenges. The brittleness of many ceramic materials makes them susceptible to fracture under sudden impact or stress, a common occurrence in the demanding environment of an internal combustion engine. Manufacturing complex ceramic components with the required precision and at an economical cost has also proven difficult. Research and development continue in this area, focusing on creating more robust ceramic composites and advanced manufacturing techniques to harness the potential benefits of ceramic materials in engine design.
