A simile, on the other hand, is a figure of speech that directly compares two different things using "like" or "as."

A kenningsimile takes this a step further by using the structure of a kenning but incorporating a comparative word like "like" or "as." For example, instead of a simple kenning like "sky-candle" for the sun, a kenningsimile might be "the sky-candle, like a burning eye, watched over the world." Here, "sky-candle" functions as a kenning, and "like a burning eye" functions as a simile, creating a richer and more complex image.

This device allows poets to layer meaning and create evocative imagery. The kenning part provides a concise, often traditional, metaphor, while the simile part adds a more explicit and nuanced comparison, often illuminating a specific quality of the subject.
