Kendrapara

Kendrapara is a district in the eastern Indian state of Odisha. The district's administrative headquarters is Kendrapara town. Located in the coastal delta region, Kendrapara lies in the Brahmani river system and has a coastline along the Bay of Bengal. The landscape features tidal estuaries, wetlands and mangrove forests that support diverse flora and fauna.

Historically part of the Cuttack district, Kendrapara became a separate district in 1994. The name derives from Kendrapara town, which serves as the administrative hub for the district.

Economy and environment: Agriculture is the main occupation, with rice as a staple crop and coconuts also grown in the region. Fishing and aquaculture are important along the rivers and estuaries, and salt production occurs in some coastal pockets. The district’s biodiversity is highlighted by Bhitarkanika National Park, a protected mangrove ecosystem known for saltwater crocodiles and migratory birds.

Administration and people: Kendrapara district is divided into several blocks and municipalities. Odia is the predominant language and medium of instruction, with English and Hindi also used in education and administration. The district is home to communities representative of coastal Odisha, reflecting a mix of agrarian and fishing livelihoods.
