Kemotaktikkona

Kemotaktikkona is the directed movement of cells in response to chemical gradients. In biology, it describes how organisms—from single-celled bacteria to multicellular immune cells—navigate their environment by sensing attractants and repellents. Positive chemotaxis guides cells toward higher concentrations of a chemical, while negative chemotaxis drives movement away from it.

In bacteria such as Escherichia coli, kemotaktikkona is achieved through a run-and-tumble strategy modulated by receptors called methyl-accepting chemotaxis proteins (MCPs). When attractants or repellents bind to these receptors, they alter signaling pathways that bias the rotation of the flagella, reducing or increasing the frequency of tumbles to steer toward favorable conditions. Adaptation is achieved through receptor methylation and demethylation, allowing cells to respond to persistent gradients.

In much of the eukaryotic world, kemotaktikkona involves surface receptors that detect chemoattractants and trigger intracellular signaling that creates a front–rear polarity. Signals such as PI3K-generated PIP3 become enriched at the leading edge, guiding actin polymerization and protrusion formation, while others move toward contraction at the rear. The result is directed migration toward higher concentrations of the attractant, with variations among amoebae, neutrophils, and other cell types.

Chemotaxis relies on gradient sensing, which can be spatial (cells compare signals across their surface) or temporal (they compare signals over time). Attractants include nutrients and cytokines; repellents include toxins or harmful substances. The architecture of the gradient, receptor sensitivity, and cell polarity determine migration efficiency.

Kemotaktikkona is essential for immune defense, wound healing, development, and microbial ecology. It drives neutrophil recruitment to infection, guides embryonic cell movements, and influences biofilm formation. Disruptions in chemotactic signaling are linked to disease, including chronic inflammation and cancer metastasis.
