Kehikkoja

Kehikkoja are frames or skeletons that provide structural support and define geometry for objects, structures, and systems. The term is used in Finnish to describe both physical frameworks and conceptual outlines. In construction and engineering, kehikko refers to the load-bearing skeleton of a building or machine. A steel or timber kehikko carries vertical loads and transmits them to foundations, while facilitating attachment of walls, floors, or enclosures. In prefabricated construction, modular kehikot allow rapid assembly and standardized joints. In manufacturing and furniture, kehikot form the internal frame that defines shape and rigidity and supports external panels and components.

Materials commonly used for kehikko systems include steel, timber, and aluminum, selected for stiffness, strength, and weight. Joints are made by welding, bolting, or screw-fastening and may include bracing or gussets to improve stability. The design of a kehikko considers loads, vibration, thermal effects, and durability, as well as constructibility and maintenance.

Beyond physical structures, kehikko can denote a framework or outline for planning, research, or argumentation. A project kehikko outlines key modules, interfaces, and milestones, providing a reference structure for development. The plural kehikkoja simply refers to multiple frames or frameworks. The term is widely used in Finnish technical literature, education, and industry to describe the foundational skeleton around which a system is built or conceptualized.
