Its primary function is to control how an image or graphic is resized. When keepaspectratio is enabled, the system attempts to maintain the original width-to-height ratio of the element. This prevents distortion, ensuring that the image does not appear stretched or squashed.

For example, if an image with a 2:1 aspect ratio is resized to fit a container that is square, and keepaspectratio is true, the image will be scaled down until its longest dimension fits the container. The shorter dimension will then be scaled proportionally to maintain the 2:1 ratio. This will likely result in some empty space within the container. If keepaspectratio is false, the image will be stretched to fill the entire container, regardless of its original proportions, leading to distortion.

In web development, CSS properties like `object-fit: contain` or `object-fit: cover` achieve similar results to keepaspectratio. In image processing libraries, a parameter named `keepaspectratio` or similar is often used during scaling operations. Understanding and utilizing this parameter is crucial for presenting visual content accurately and aesthetically.
