Kaugummis

Kaugummis are a confectionery product designed for chewing rather than swallowing. They are typically composed of a gum base, sweeteners, flavorings and softeners, with colorings and acids sometimes added to provide taste and appearance. The gum base can be natural, such as chicle or jelutong, or synthetic, including polymers like polyvinyl acetate.

In sugar-containing formulations, sucrose or glucose is common; in sugar-free variants, sugar alcohols such as sorbitol or xylitol are used. Softeners keep the gum pliable, while flavorings provide mint, fruit, or other tastes. Some sugar-free variants use xylitol, which is sometimes associated with dental health benefits.

Chewing gum has ancient roots in the Americas, where sapodilla-derived chicle was chewed by Maya and Aztec people. In the 19th century, American manufacturers began heating and molding gum bases, and mass-market chewing gum was popularized by companies such as Wrigley. Bubble gum, a soft, malleable version suitable for blowing bubbles, was invented by Walter Diemer in 1928.

Common types include standard chewing gum, sugar-free gum, and bubble gum; there are functional variants such as dental gums that claim to promote dental health or nicotine gum for cessation. Chewing gum is intended for disposal after use and not swallowed.

Sugar-containing gum can contribute to tooth decay if mouth cleanliness is not maintained; sugar-free gums with xylitol may have dental benefits. Some individuals experience jaw discomfort or choking risks, particularly for young children. Gum litter is a concern in many regions, leading to municipal bans in some places and efforts to promote proper disposal.
