Kaudsega

Kaudsega is a traditional wind instrument associated with the fictional region of Eldara. It is described as an end-blown wooden flute used in ceremonial music and storytelling.

Construction: The kaudsega is typically 35–40 cm long, with a straight bore and six finger holes plus a thumb hole. It is commonly carved from alder, maple, or pear wood, and may bear incised geometric motifs near the mouthpiece.

Playing technique and sound: It is played by directing a focused airstream across the edge of the mouthpiece. Holes are opened and closed to form melodies, while breath control and tonguing shape articulation. The timbre is bright and flute-like, with a delicate upper register.

Use and cultural context: In Eldaran communities, the kaudsega accompanies oral narratives, dances, and seasonal rites. It is traditionally performed in small ensembles with percussion and is taught in local workshops to preserve craftsmanship.
