Kaubagrupid are a classification system used to group goods (kaubad) according to similarities in characteristics, use, or production. They provide a structured framework for organizing products in trade, industry analysis, and economic statistics. By grouping items into defined codes, kaubagrupid enable consistent data collection, comparability over time, and efficient administration in areas such as customs, taxation, and market research.

In practice kaubagrupid are aligned with international classification schemes such as the Harmonized System (HS) and, in the European Union, the Combined Nomenclature (CN). National statistical offices and customs authorities adapt these systems to their languages and national needs. In Estonia, kaubagrupid are implemented in coordination with CN/HS frameworks and are used by the national statistics office (Statistikaamet) and customs authorities to produce foreign trade statistics, tariff calculations, and sector analyses.

The structure of kaubagrupid is hierarchical, typically consisting of codes that subdivide broad product groups into more detailed subgroups. This allows analysts to examine broad trends while also isolating specific product categories. Examples of broad groups commonly encountered include energy products, chemicals, machinery and transportation equipment, agricultural goods, and consumer products. The granularity of the codes supports both high-level economic indicators and detailed industry studies.
