Katmist is a term used in speculative fiction and worldbuilding to describe a fine, luminescent mist that arises from biological and environmental processes in certain fictional ecosystems. It functions as both an atmospheric phenomenon and a resource within stories and settings.

The name blends a fictional root, kat-, from the Katara language, with the English word mist. It has appeared in mid-21st to 22nd century literary and game lore, and there is no basis for katmist as a real-world scientific term.

In described contexts, katmist consists of microdroplets roughly 0.1 to 2 micrometers in diameter. The droplets are composed of organic polymers, water, and trace pigments, sometimes incorporating bioluminescent proteins. Under twilight, the mist emits a soft glow that can range from pale blue to violet, depending on composition and lighting conditions.

Formation and distribution are tied to interactions between katflora, a fictional plant, and resident microbes within a humid boundary layer. Favorable conditions include humidity above about 70 percent and cooler nocturnal temperatures. Katmist tends to accumulate in coastal and archipelago environments where these factors recur.

Ecologically, katmist can deter herbivores and attract nocturnal pollinators through light signals and scent. Human uses in narratives include signaling, camouflage, and the extraction of bioactive compounds.
