Kationvahetusvõimet refers to the ability of a substance to exchange cations, which are positively charged ions. This property is particularly important in the context of ion-exchange resins, materials widely used in water treatment, chemical separation, and analytical chemistry. These resins are typically porous polymers containing charged functional groups. When a solution containing cations passes through a bed of these resins, cations in the solution can be adsorbed onto the resin's functional groups, and in exchange, cations already present on the resin are released into the solution.

The capacity of a material to undergo this ion exchange is quantified by its cation exchange capacity (CEC). CEC is usually expressed in milliequivalents per gram (meq/g) or millimoles per gram (mmol/g) of the exchanger. A higher CEC indicates a greater ability of the material to bind cations. The strength with which the resin holds onto specific cations is also a crucial factor, often related to the charge density and hydrated radius of the ions.

Different types of cation exchange resins exist, categorized by the chemical nature of their functional groups, such as strong acid cation exchangers (e.g., sulfonic acid groups) and weak acid cation exchangers (e.g., carboxylic acid groups). The choice of resin depends on the specific application and the types of cations to be removed or separated.
