These ligand frameworks are crucial for processes such as cross-coupling, olefin metathesis, and asymmetric hydrogenation.

Organic synthesis frequently employs proline as a simple peptide-derived catalyst for aldol and Michael reactions, highlighting the practical utility of small catalytic groups in constructing complex molecules. Catalytic groups also play a central role in renewable energy technologies, where cobalt- or nickel-based catalysts containing pyridine or imidazole rings facilitate water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction.
