Kastelun

Kastelun is a town and commune in the northern part of the country, located along the River Elen. It serves as the administrative center of the surrounding district and maintains a historic core featuring medieval fortifications and a central market square.

Historically, Kastelun originated in the 11th century as a fortress protecting river crossings. A surrounding market settlement grew into a chartered town by the 13th century. The fortress and walls were repeatedly rebuilt in the 15th and 17th centuries, and the town expanded with rail access and light industry in the 19th and 20th centuries.

The town sits on gently rolling terrain with an agricultural hinterland and a river valley that shapes its streetscape. The climate is temperate, with mild winters and warm summers.

Today Kastelun relies on services, small manufacturing, and agriculture from nearby farms. The economy benefits from a regional rail line and a national road that connect it to larger cities. The town hosts a weekly market and several small business districts.

Notable sites include Kastelun Fortress ruins, the Old Market Hall, and St. Helena Cathedral. Cultural life centers on the annual harvest festival, local music groups, and museums that document regional history.

With a population in the range of 8,000 to 10,000, Kastelun is predominantly residential, with a mix of families and retirees. Local government is headed by a mayor and council, elected to serve four-year terms.
