Kastellorizo

Kastellorizo, also known as Megisti, is a small Greek island in the eastern Mediterranean, located near the Turkish coast. The island has a total area of 9.093 km² and a coastline of roughly 18.3 km. It is the second-smallest municipality in the Dodecanese group of islands and the smallest municipality in the Greek islands.

Kastellorizo has a long and complex history, with various civilizations having ruled the island. It was strategically important due to its location, with ancient civilizations such as the Phoenicians, Romans, and Byzantines all having occupied the island at some point. During the Middle Ages, Kastellorizo was ruled by the Arabs, and later by the Genoese and the Republic of Venice. Following the Greek War of Independence in 1832, the island was absorbed into the Kingdom of Greece.

Today, the island has a total population of less than 500, mostly engaged in fishing and tourism. Kastellorizo is notable for its stunning natural beauty, with steep cliffs, secluded beaches, and a dry Mediterranean climate. The island's capital, Kastellorizo, is a well-preserved medieval town with narrow streets and picturesque architecture. Kastellorizo is also known for its castle, the Kastello, which was built by the Knights of St. John and has been expanded by various subsequent rulers.

In recent years, Kastellorizo has become more accessible to tourists, with improved transportation links and the development of basic tourist infrastructure. Despite its small size and relatively remote location, the island remains a popular destination for visitors seeking a tranquil and historically rich experience.
