Karbonylföreningen is a term used in chemistry to describe a molecule containing a carbonyl group. A carbonyl group consists of a carbon atom double-bonded to an oxygen atom, represented by the chemical formula C=O. This functional group is a fundamental building block in organic chemistry and is found in a vast array of compounds.

The presence of the carbonyl group significantly influences the physical and chemical properties of a molecule. The strong polarity of the carbon-oxygen double bond, due to oxygen's higher electronegativity, makes the carbon atom partially positive and the oxygen atom partially negative. This polarity leads to intermolecular attractions such as dipole-dipole interactions, affecting properties like boiling points and solubility. Furthermore, the carbonyl group is highly reactive and serves as a site for various chemical transformations.

Common classes of organic compounds that contain the carbonyl group include aldehydes, ketones, carboxylic acids, esters, amides, and acid halides. Aldehydes feature the carbonyl group at the end of a carbon chain, bonded to at least one hydrogen atom. Ketones have the carbonyl group located within a carbon chain, bonded to two other carbon atoms. Carboxylic acids contain a carbonyl group directly attached to a hydroxyl (-OH) group. Esters are derivatives of carboxylic acids where the hydrogen of the hydroxyl group is replaced by an alkyl or aryl group. Amides are formed when the hydroxyl group of a carboxylic acid is replaced by an amino group (-NH2, -NHR, or -NR2). Acid halides have a halogen atom in place of the hydroxyl group. Each of these classes exhibits distinct reactivity patterns due to the specific arrangement of atoms around the carbonyl group.
