Karbonaattikiviä

Karbonaattikiviä are a group of sedimentary rocks primarily composed of carbonate minerals. The most common carbonate minerals found in these rocks are calcite (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) and dolomite (calcium magnesium carbonate, CaMg(CO3)2). Karbonaattikiviä form in various environments, often in marine settings where the shells and skeletons of marine organisms accumulate, or through chemical precipitation from water.

The formation process typically involves the slow deposition of carbonate-rich sediments over geological timescales. These sediments can be biogenic, meaning they are derived from the remains of organisms like corals, mollusks, and plankton. Alternatively, they can be abiogenic, forming through chemical reactions where carbonate ions in water combine to precipitate as solid minerals. Over time, the accumulated sediments are compacted and cemented, turning into solid rock.

The main types of karbonaattikiviä include limestone and dolomite. Limestone is predominantly composed of calcite, while dolomite is primarily composed of dolomite. Marble, a metamorphic rock, is formed when limestone or dolomite are subjected to heat and pressure, recrystallizing their mineral structures.

Karbonaattikiviä have significant economic and geological importance. They are widely used as construction materials, for example, in cement production and as building stones.
