Kanungu

Kanungu is a town located in southwestern Uganda, serving as the administrative center for the Kanungu District. The town lies near the border with the Democratic Republic of Congo. Its economy is primarily driven by agriculture, with crops such as coffee, beans, and bananas being significant. Kanungu is also situated close to the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site renowned for its population of mountain gorillas, which contributes to local tourism and related businesses.

Historically, Kanungu gained international attention in March 2000 due to a tragic event. The Movement for the Restoration of the Ten Commandments of God, a cult, experienced a mass death of its followers in a fire at their church in the nearby village of Rugazi. This event resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people and remains a significant point in the town's recent history. The town has since focused on development and rebuilding its community. Kanungu District is known for its hilly terrain and lush vegetation, characteristic of the Albertine Rift region. The population is predominantly rural, with a growing urban center in Kanungu town itself.
