Kantamuotojen article discusses the linguistic concept of base forms of words, known in Finnish as kantamuoto. A kantamuoto is the canonical form from which a word’s inflected variants are derived. In many contexts, kantamuoto is treated as the lemma or dictionary form. For a noun like talo (house), the kantamuoto is talo, and inflected forms include talon (genitive singular), talossa (inessive), taloja (partitive), etc. For a verb like kirjoittaa (to write), the kantamuoto is kirjoittaa (the infinitive), with inflected forms such as kirjoitan, kirjoitat, kirjoitti. For an adjective like kaunis (beautiful), the kantamuoto is kaunis (positive singular nominative), from which inflected forms such as kauniimpi, kauniita, kauneimpia are derived.
