Kantajamolekyylejä, often translated as carrier molecules or transport proteins, are a class of proteins crucial for moving substances across biological membranes. These molecules are integral to cellular function, enabling the uptake of essential nutrients and the removal of waste products. They achieve this by binding to specific molecules, such as ions, sugars, or amino acids, and facilitating their passage through the lipid bilayer that forms cell membranes.

There are several types of kantajamolekyylejä. Channel proteins form hydrophilic pores through the membrane, allowing small molecules or ions to pass through passively.
