Kanskje is a Norwegian adverb meaning maybe, perhaps, or possibly. It is used to express uncertainty or possibility and can soften statements or proposals. The word can appear at the beginning of a sentence or after the subject, and it often stands alone before the rest of the clause, but it can also modify a larger phrase.

Etymology and form: Kanskje is historically derived from the phrase kan skje, meaning “can happen.” Ske means “to happen” in Norwegian, and kan means “can” or “be able to.” Over time the two words fused into a single adverb. The form is standard in Bokmål and widely used in Nynorsk as well.

Usage and examples: Kanskje can introduce a statement about what is possible. Examples include: Kanskje kommer han senere. (Maybe he will come later.) Det blir kanskje regn i morgen. (There might be rain tomorrow.) Jeg kommer kanskje senere. (I may come later.) It can also appear with ikke to express “maybe not”: Kanskje ikke. This flexibility makes kanskj e a common feature in everyday Norwegian speech and writing.

Cognates and variation: In other Scandinavian languages, related forms exist with similar meaning. Swedish has kanskje, while Danish uses måske (and sometimes måske/kanske in informal writing). The Norwegian kanskj e is distinct in spelling but shares the same basic sense of possibility and hedging.
