Kaniyan

Kaniyan refers to a traditional Tamil community found in Tamil Nadu, India. Historically, they were known as astrologers and soothsayers. The term "Kaniyan" itself is derived from the Tamil word "kani," which means "to see" or "to predict." This community traditionally played a significant role in the social and religious life of villages, providing astrological consultations, divining auspicious times for events, and sometimes serving as village record-keepers.

Their practices often involved the use of palm leaves, almanacs, and celestial observations to interpret the future and offer guidance. While their traditional occupation as sole astrologers has seen a decline with modernization, many members of the Kaniyan community have diversified into other professions. However, the cultural heritage and ancestral knowledge associated with astrology and divination remain an important aspect of their identity.
