Kammarvätskan

Kammarvätskan, also known as aqueous humor, is the transparent fluid that fills the anterior and posterior chambers of the eye. It is produced by the ciliary body, a structure located within the eye. This fluid plays a crucial role in maintaining the shape and pressure of the eyeball, a state known as intraocular pressure.

The composition of kammarvätskan is similar to plasma but with a lower protein and ion concentration. It provides nourishment to the avascular tissues of the eye, specifically the cornea and the lens, by supplying nutrients and removing waste products. This continuous circulation of fluid also helps to maintain the transparency of these structures, which is essential for clear vision.

Kammarvätskan is drained from the eye primarily through the trabecular meshwork, located at the angle where the iris meets the cornea. From there, it enters Schlemm's canal and eventually the bloodstream. A secondary drainage pathway exists through the uveoscleral outflow. Disruptions in this delicate balance of production and drainage can lead to an increase in intraocular pressure, a condition known as glaucoma, which can damage the optic nerve and lead to vision loss. Regular eye examinations are important for monitoring intraocular pressure and detecting any potential issues related to kammarvätskan circulation.
