Kamianske

Kamianske, formerly known as Dniprodzerzhynsk, is a city in the Dnipropetrovsk Oblast of Ukraine. It is situated on the banks of the Dnieper River, approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) southeast of Dnipro, the administrative center of the oblast. The city's industrial heritage is a defining characteristic, with a strong presence in metallurgy and chemical production.

Historically, the area has been inhabited since ancient times, with evidence of Scythian settlements. The modern city's origins trace back to the 18th century with the establishment of a Cossack settlement. However, its significant development began in the late 19th century with the construction of a large metallurgical plant and the surrounding workers' settlement, which was named Kamianske. In 1936, the city was renamed Dniprodzerzhynsk in honor of Felix Dzerzhinsky, a prominent Bolshevik revolutionary.

During World War II, Kamianske suffered extensive damage. Post-war reconstruction focused on rebuilding its industrial capacity. In 2016, as part of Ukraine's decommunization efforts, the city's name was officially changed back to Kamianske. The city's economy remains heavily reliant on its industrial sector, particularly the production of steel and chemicals. Kamianske is also a significant transportation hub, with railway connections and river port facilities on the Dnieper.
