Kalvokytkin

Kalvokytkin, also known as a diaphragm clutch, is a type of friction clutch that utilizes a flexible diaphragm as the primary engagement element. Unlike traditional clutch designs that use coil springs, a kalvokytkin employs a dished, spring-steel diaphragm. This diaphragm is mounted with its outer edge to the flywheel and its inner edge to the clutch plate.

When the clutch pedal is released, the diaphragm is in a relaxed state. Its shape allows it to press the clutch plate against the flywheel, transmitting torque. As the clutch pedal is pressed, a release bearing acts on the inner edge of the diaphragm. This action causes the diaphragm to pivot on its outer edge, lifting the inner edge away from the clutch plate. This disengagement breaks the friction contact, allowing the engine to be separated from the transmission.

Kalvokytkimet offer several advantages, including a more linear engagement feel and a smoother engagement due to the diaphragm's progressive spring action. They are also generally more compact and require less pedal effort for disengagement compared to some other clutch types. This design is commonly found in a variety of vehicles, particularly in applications where smooth operation and a compact design are desirable. The self-energizing characteristic of the diaphragm can also contribute to a more robust engagement.
